I would just like to say thank you for making this DVD. I am a young Puerto Rican kid from Chicago. I had a rough upcoming with gangs. I never knew who the Boriqueneers were or Alibuzu Campos. Even though I saw the murals in Chicago I never really understood the challenges until I was older. Please continue the work to educate those who don’t (or didn’t) know their great history. By educating me you are giving me the chance to educate others. Keep it coming.

My Father fought in the Korean War with the Fighting 65th Infantry. He dosen’t talk about it much but sometimes he tells stories to his grandchildren about things that he went through while in Korea. His name is Pedro R. Perez and is now 80 years old. I recently purchased the book about the fighting 65th Infantry and gave it to him for Christmas. My Father was unjustly discharged from the U.S.Army after returning from Korea and was never given his proper place in history. He was not mentioned in the book, although he served side by side with the bravest men of the fighting 65th. To me what he went through can never be forgotten and He will always be my Hero and a true BORINQUENEER.

I have not seen the video yet, but know of the great sacrifice and courage the 65th Infantry Regiment displayed in Korea. Interested and proud in a all things Puerto Rican, I frequently research about our history and culture. Having served in the U.S. Army for 21 years and retired in 2007, I am familiar with the personal sacrifice all soldiers make in service to country. Unfortunately and to my disappointment Puerto Rican Soldiers do not get enough recognition for their remarkable discipline, courage and dedication to duty. Therefore, your work and effort and that of all Puerto Ricans to teach our future generations our history and culture, from the Tainos to current day is very important. Not only to greet each other with “Boricua”, more so to truly know our history! Le doy mi amor de hermano Puertorriqueno a todo Borincano que alza la gloria de nuestra Islita con orgullo y respeto atraves de su esfuerzo como lo hicieron The Borinqueneers! HOOAH!

My name is Milton Rosario, and I am a retired NYPD Detective who now teaches Criminal Justice at the high school level in Port St. Lucie Florida.  I am also a Chaplain for the Brevard County 10-13 Club, a group of retired police officers from the New York area.  I have just returned from our 10-13 monthly meeting where I spoke about our need, as a country, to remember our veterans more – especially during Veterans Day.  I am not happy with the decline in admiration towards our soldiers.  I have spent all day writing articles and sermons dealing with this issue.  This is the last e-mail I will write before I lay my head down for the night.  But I am all fired up about this issue and I just couldn’t resist this one when I read your Borinqueneers Newsletter this evening.  Like I said, I have spent all day writing about and the recognition that our soldiers should be receiving this time of year.  But before I go to sleep I must also commend you Madam for all of the work that you have dedicated towards the issue of the 65th Infantry.  You have been so dedicated to this cause and I, as a Puerto Rican (who never served in the military) thank you.  You have brought these soldier’s stories to life and I feel like I know them personally.  My wife and I met you a few years ago at the Museo del Barrio during a presentation of your documentary and I was very impressed with your work and dedication.  As the years have gone by, I’ve noticed that you have not let this issue lose it’s place in the public eye, just the opposite, you have pushed for more recognition.  During this Veterans Day I would like to include you in my list of soldiers who I thank God for.  I thank God for the soldiers of the 65th Infantry – those GIANTS who’s shoulders I stand on.  But I also thank God for you – the soldier who has taken on the fight that no one else saw.  The fight to recognize and defend our 65th.  May our Lord and Savior guide you through your battlefield as you fight the good fight.  Heroes are not just those who run into burning buildings, but also those who become a voice for the voiceless.

Very respectfully yours,
Milton Rosario

I just finished reading the book; Puerto Rico’s Fighting 65th: From San Juan to Chorwan by: W.W. Harris, and I couldn’t be more proud of my father Jorge Luis Cebollero for being part of the legendary 65th Infantry. The above mentioned book is must reading for anyone interested in understanding the strategic and tactical thinking of the 65th in Korea. My deepest gratitude to all those who have contributed to this honorable endeavor to recognize the special contribution our compatriots at arms made. May the good Lord alway bless our beloved land and protect it. Long live the memory of the Borinqueneers!

June, 2010 My father, Sgt.1st Class Julio Maisonet was a Borinqueneer. He received rhe Bronze Star and the Purple Heart medals for service over and beyond the call of duty while in Korea. He retired in 1968 after serving 2 tours in VietNam in the 101 St Airborne out of Fort Benning’ GA. He was the most honourable man I have ever known, the best father, husband, brother, uncle, son, friend. His name is inscripted in the Koren War Memorial in Washington and should be in any memorial to Viet Nam Veterans anywhere. He was a soldiers soldier, a Hero, a true Patriot even in a country who thought he was a minority because he was Puertorican. As a Borinquener he spoke little english but understood all he was told and saw his brothers get killed by the hundreds in that cold and gray place called South Korea, walking in their blood, a young man in his early twenties. He held his ground alongside all those other brave Heroes who survived. But tbe Army did not finish with him there. In 1966 he trained for the 101 Airborne. I recollect his coming home exhausted. And in 1967, he went to Viet Nam. When he came home, he, a seasoned soldier, had nightmares and cried when he saw little kids. He said no one should see the things he and his men saw in those early battles in Viet Nam . Today, june 22, 2010, I remember him with pride and never ending love. He died sitting, he said a soldier did not die in bed, in 2003. Daddy, my Hero. I know you walk proudly alonside all the Heroes of all america’s wars in that special place God has for Heroes.
