ASIAN AMERICAN LIFE PROGRAM: The Forgotten War, Seventy Years After the Armistice
This special looks at the untold stories of life during and after the Korean War. Host and correspondent Vivian Lee provides a historical overview on the United States involvement in the Korean War and examines what happened after the armistice agreement was signed on July 27, 1953 to stop active fighting. The war never officially ended, and today tensions continue between North and South Korea over nuclear weapons and the demilitarized zone.
In this special we present in-depth interviews with North and South Korean war survivors who share their experiences and how they’ve rebuilt their lives in the United States. Plus we honor and remember the forgotten heroes who fought on the frontlines with the American troops, including intimate stories from Korean and Puerto Rican veterans who were awarded for their bravery. We also examine the peacekeeping missions that continue today and how veterans are raising awareness on the consequences of war.
Plus we debut “The Borinqueneers,” a one-hour documentary by award-winning filmmaker Noemi Figueroa Soulet. [NOTE: The film was removed for posting online.] The film chronicles the never-before-told stories of the Puerto Rican 65th Infantry Regiment, the only all-Hispanic unit in U.S. Army history. Narrated by Hector Elizondo, the documentary relies on the vivid testimony of the regiment’s veterans and rare archival footage to trace the unique experience of the 65th, culminating in the Korean War and the dramatic events that would threaten its very existence.
